ILKAR international seminar - Preserving Endangered Audio Media

June 9-10th, 2011
Ethnologisches Museum Berlin

On Friday, June 10th Hinnerk Gehrckens (German National Library) and Tom Lorenz (Cube-Tec International) have given a joint presentation on quality management for digitization projects.

ilkar 2011

Quality management for digitization projects

Despite all efforts to preserve historical media, digitalization is the only way for long-term storage of the audio and audiovisual media content.

Due to the continuous decay of these media, digitization projects should be made with the claim of the maximum quality. On the other hand, digitizing with the highest quality possible have also to be financially feasible.

Automated quality management plays a key role for high quality and economic aspects as well. Over-reliance in the quality of a digitization project can be extremely costly and also can lead to the total loss of the historic media content. The traditional methods of manual quality control are extremely time-consuming and therefore expensive. In many ways these methods are also technologically limited and do not provide a complete monitoring of quality.

Conventional quality analysis of digital audio and video signals is very limited, too. For a reliable decision on signal quality, these algorithms lack the most important information: is a detected quality flaw actually the result of a digitization error, e.g. a faulty player, or is it already present on the original media?

For uncompromising quality control and good economy there are two complementary automated procedures which will be presented in detail:

  • automated control of the whole digitalization signal-chain using a reference medium
  • seamless automated comparison of two digitizations from the same media

The methods were developed by the CONTENTUS research project. As a parallel progress they were also developed and released as commercial products by the company Cube-Tec International.

On Tuesday, May 31st Joerg Houpert will give an oral presentation about
Streamlining Quality Control for Film and Film Sound Archiving.

The presentation is about quality control in large-scale film digitization and preservation projects. Archival applications like generating master archive packages and the automatic sound enhancement of proxy copies will be described. Necessary steps to supervise the audiovisual data for defects that may have been introduced during the transfer process and the possibility of automated rule-based decisions will be shown.

Rob Poretti will be presenting “Audio Analysis and Processing in Multimedia Formats”.

This paper will explore solutions for processing audio strams within multi-media formats. Using Cube-Tec's softare tools, it will explore approaches to analyze, process and extract audio streams and associated metadata from audio-visual files.

Workflow examples include demuxing audio and video elementary streams, trancoding audio and video streams within stream or wrapped formats, managing audio loudness processing and metadata, conditional audio processing based on file analysis, updating metadata for derivative generation, and more.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
